Some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress have taken to social media to express their disgust about a planned football match between the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party, on Saturday, September 4, at the Madina Astro Turf. In a series of social media posts monitored by TV Africa News, the disenchanted party folks rubbished the upcoming fixture; calling for an immediate cancellation of same.
The fixture, which is expected to foster cordial rapports and extinguish any existing tensions between the two parties will see some leading social media commentators and activists of the NDC, locking horns with their counterparts in the NPP, in a friendly contest of soccer at 9am on Saturday morning.
But despite the euphoria and excitement that has greeted the heavily anticipated fixture, some supporters of the NDC have expressed their anger about the arrangement; describing it as a blatant betrayal of the values of the NDC, especially in the face of the recent banters between the two leading political parties in the country.
According to the aggrieved party supporters, the upcoming match is also a spit in the face of teeming NDC sympathisers who queued to vote for the NDC during the December 7 general elections. In their view, the NDC has no business fraternising with the NPP, following the level of violence and killings the NPP masterminded in the 2020 December polls.
In the opinion of the enraged NDC folks, the party should be more concerned about keeping the NPP in check, instead of selfishly hobnobbing with the same individuals who are behind the current economic hardship and suffering in their country. For them, the NDC is gradually losing its respect as a credible opposition party, reason for which such a match with the ruling government should not be organised in the first place.
A sympathiser of the NDC who spoke anonymously to TV Africa News argued that, the scheduled match will only deepen the impression that the opposition is in bed with the ruling government; a perception that could dampen the momentum of the party’s base.
He further indicated that, the party is gradually losing its touch with the grassroot and hence such open displays of ‘collaboration’ with the NPP should be avoided in the interest of the party. In his view, the scheduled fixture should be cancelled immediately by the hierarchy of the party to avert any bad returns for the NDC ahead of the 2024 general election.
Even though the hierarchy of the NDC is yet to formally engage on the matter, some sources say the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC has taken note of this development and is making plans to abort the planned fixture with the opposition.
Meanwhile, the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye has thrown his support behind the fixture, with a promise to demonstrate his ‘sophisticated dribbling skills’ on Saturday morning. He disclosed this on his Facebook wall, earlier today.
